Aluminium

Aluminium can form slim, rigid profiles and is widely used in large openings. Because metal conducts heat readily, profile construction matters. A thermally improved frame uses a lower-conductivity separator between interior and exterior portions; its effectiveness depends on the complete system, not the visible finish.

Inspect corner joints, drainage routes, coating information and compatibility between fasteners and surrounding materials. Coastal exposure can make finish selection and routine rinsing especially relevant.

uPVC

uPVC frames use multi-chamber profiles and generally conduct less heat than unbroken metal. Profile reinforcement, colour, dimensions and exposure influence behaviour. Large units need a system designed for their size and loads rather than an assumption based on material alone.

Ask how reinforcement, drainage and hardware are configured. Check cleaning guidance before using solvents or abrasive products on the surface.

Timber and composite approaches

Timber provides a warm interior surface and can offer good thermal performance, but coatings and joints need planned inspection. Composite systems combine materials—for example a protected exterior face with a different interior finish—to distribute tasks between layers.

For every material, exposure and maintenance capacity matter. A finish that is easy to maintain in one elevation may be less practical in an inaccessible opening.

1. Confirm the quoted system and exact profile series.
2. Request whole-window performance where relevant.
3. Check maximum tested sizes and hardware limits.
4. Review drainage, gaskets and replaceable parts.
5. Record finish codes and cleaning instructions.

Frame material is one input. Installation interfaces, glass selection and shading can be equally important to the outcome.
