01 — Read the elevation before the product
Start with a simple elevation survey. Mark every opening as north, east, south or west-facing, then record what stands in front of it: an overhang, adjacent building, balcony, tree or open sky. A west-facing pane exposed to late-afternoon sun has a different task from a shaded north-facing opening, even when their dimensions match.
Observe the room at three times—morning, midday and late afternoon. Note glare on work surfaces, hot zones near the glass and rooms that stay bright without direct rays. This low-tech record gives useful context for later discussions about glass, external shading and ventilation.
Compare windows by the conditions they face, not by appearance alone.
02 — Separate heat, light and view
These goals overlap, but they are not identical. A large clear opening may preserve a view while admitting more solar heat. Heavy tint can reduce brightness but alter colour and night-time privacy. External shade can intercept direct sun while retaining clearer glass.
- Heat: consider solar heat gain, frame conduction and air leakage.
- Daylight: consider visible light and glare, not only pane area.
- View: consider mullion position, reflections and insect screens.
- Privacy: test both daytime and night-time conditions.
03 — Account for dust and maintenance
Tracks, drainage paths, gaskets and screens all collect dust. A complicated opening can become inconvenient if its moving parts are difficult to reach. Before choosing an operating style, imagine the complete cleaning route from inside and outside.
Ask where water used in cleaning will drain, whether the screen can be removed without tools and whether replacement seals can be identified later. Maintenance access is part of design quality, not an afterthought.
04 — Build a written brief
For each opening, prepare one page with orientation, approximate size, photographs, operating preference, shading, privacy needs and observed problems. Add questions rather than assumptions. A useful brief makes competing proposals easier to compare on the same basis.
Technical choices should be checked against the applicable project requirements and manufacturer documentation. This guide is general information, not a specification for a particular building.
